Thomas Jefferson, the father of American wine, just had a birthday this week, one way you can celebrate is by enjoying the combination of Virginia sparkling wine and learning more about the world-class quality wines made in Virginia today. Come to the Wine Guild in Charlottesville next Thursday, April 21, between 5:30-7:30. Richard Leahy (this writer) will tell us about how Virginia’s modern wine industry has evolved to make it the favorite North American Wine Region for renowned British wine writer Steven Spurrier, and many others!

Richard will bring copies of Beyond Jefferson’s Vines (3rd edition), to personalize and sell. Beyond Jefferson’s Vines (third edition, 2020) is the complete story of wine in Virginia, from the Jamestown Settlement, to Thomas Jefferson and his vineyard at Monticello, to the thriving world-class wine industry of today. It focuses on the last 20 years and explains how vintners today have achieved the success Jefferson only dreamed of. This new, expanded third edition features a foreword by Steven Spurrier. The book blends history with a travelogue along with personal interviews with key industry members to help you gain a full understanding of the subject. Wineries featured are only those with recent silver and gold medals in the Governor’s Cup competition. You’ll have a new appreciation for the quality Virginia wine has achieved today, and the risk these dedicated people take in their dogged pursuit to realize Jefferson’s dream of a fine wine industry in Virginia.
