A growing season without major frost damage, mostly dry with cool nights through mid-September makes it look like 2023 will be a banner vintage for Virginia. Reports so far indicate that the whites were harvested in nice, ripe numbers almost without exception. Early-ripening reds in some parts of the state were hit with heavy rains, but this was site-based and not a general problem.
Look for a more detailed harvest assessment from me in the fall/winter edition of Wine & Country Life.
