The 2024 Monticello Cup, given to the top performing wine entered in that competition and coming from wineries in the Monticello AVA around Charlottesville, was won by King Family Vineyards for their 2021 Mountain Plains Red (the name alludes to the original land grant for the property) is a Meritage-style blend of 45% Cabernet Franc, 37% Merlot and 18% Petit Verdot, aged in new French barrels for 22 months.

This is the second big win for King Family this year, as they also won the Governor’s Cup Competition, the top wine award in the state, for their 2019 Meritage blend, a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec red Bordeaux grapes.
